Color, treatment and finish
Garment Dyeing
Our colors are created using garment dyeing - a process where each piece is dyed after it has been cut and sewn. Unlike traditional methods, where fabric is dyed before production, this technique allows the color to develop directly on the finished garment, interacting naturally with seams, stitching, and texture.
The garments are dyed in industrial dyeing machines over the course of several hours, allowing the color to develop gradually and evenly across the finished piece.
After dyeing, each garment is washed and dried as part of the finishing process, helping to enhance softness and minimize shrinkage. Because the dye is applied to the finished garment, subtle variations in tone may occur - a natural outcome that gives every piece its own unique character.
Dye Safety & Certifications
The dyes and chemical inputs used in our garment dyeing process are carefully selected and managed with consideration for both human health and environmental responsibility.
Our production partner, Green Dye, works with restricted chemical inputs and certification frameworks aligned with recognised standards such as:
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): a leading textile certification that includes requirements for approved chemical inputs, environmental criteria, and social responsibility throughout the supply chain.
- OCS (Organic Content Standard): a certification that verifies the presence and traceability of organically grown material.
This means that when synthetic dyes are used, they are selected and managed within controlled production standards.
Natural and Synthetic Dyes
Depending on the color and desired finish, both natural and synthetic dyes may be used in production.
Natural dyes are derived from naturally occurring sources, while synthetic dyes are often selected for their color consistency, stability, and long-lasting performance.
Synthetic dyes are not inherently harmful - they are simply produced differently. When selected responsibly and used within controlled production standards, they can offer both durability and performance without compromising the quality of the finished garment.
In many cases, synthetic dyes are used to help achieve greater color consistency and color fastness over time.
Natural dyes, while valued for their origin, can sometimes offer lower color fastness and may fade or bleed more easily with wear and washing.
Faded Styles
Our Faded styles begin with the same garment dyeing process as our core products. Once the garment has been dyed, an additional finishing step is introduced to create the signature worn-in look.
This process uses mineral stones (perlite), which interact gently with the fabric inside the machine. As the garments move, the stones gradually wear down the surface of the color, creating a subtle, uneven fade. The result is a vintage-inspired finish with added depth and character, making each piece slightly unique.
After this process, the garments are washed and dried again as part of the finishing process.
Faded Finish
The faded effect is achieved through a physical finishing process rather than through an additional dyeing treatment.
- Perlite (mineral stones) is used to create the worn-in appearance
- The garments are washed after finishing
- The process is designed to create natural variation and a softer, lived-in look
Perlite provides a distressed fabric finish without sacrificing fiber strength, offering a sustainable alternative that reduces machinery wear and eliminates the need for harsh chemicals.
